Step-by-Step Guide to Building a Split Rail Fence

　　A split rail fence, also known as a post and rail or ranch fence, is a rustic, simple-to-build boundary popular for its classic look and minimal materials. It's ideal for large properties, defining space without blocking views.

　　Construction Steps:

　　1. Layout and Marking: Use string and stakes to mark the fence line. Mark the location for each post, typically 8 to 10 feet apart.

　　2. Dig Post Holes: At each mark, dig holes about 2 feet deep and 10-12 inches in diameter. Depth may need to be greater in frost-prone areas.

　　3. Set Corner and End Posts: These are the critical anchor points. Place the posts in the holes, use a level to ensure they are plumb, and brace them temporarily. Mix and pour concrete into the holes to set these posts. Let the concrete cure for at least 48 hours.

　　4. String a Guide Line: Run a string between the set corner posts at the height where the rails will be inserted. This ensures your line posts will be at a consistent height.

　　5. Set Line Posts: Place the line posts in their holes, aligning them with the guide string. Instead of concrete, backfill these holes with native soil and gravel, tamping it down firmly every few inches for stability.

　　6. Install the Rails: The most common type is a two- or three-rail system. Slide the pointed ends of the rails into the pre-drilled holes in the posts.
